Zombie Queen of Newbury High Amanda Ashby Books

Oh boy, what is there to say? Usually, when sitting down to write a review, I am enthusiastic about picking apart the novel and figuring out what worked and what didn't. Only, with Zombie Queen, I'm not at all excited. Why? I think part of it has to do with the fact that I found it incredibly difficult to finish the book. Another reason may have to do with the fact that I am SO ready to move on to something else.

So what went wrong? Well, for starters, the characters were an issue from page one. I had difficult discerning Candice from Mia and found both characters very forgettable. Actually, I found all of the characters forgettable. With third person omniscient, I think it's imperative the author create unique characters and give the readers reason to care for them, especially since we aren't given the opportunity to slip into the protagonist's shoes like with first person narrative. So when that doesn't happen, as with Zombie Queen, it makes for a boring read.

The story itself is very linear and easy to follow, bumping the rating from one star to two. Though, for a more tenured reader, this book will probably be far too predictable and formulaic. There's no strong language, drinking or sexual themes, so it's absolutely suitable for the tween market but more savvy teens may find it a bit boring. Like with Vampire Stalker things happened in a clockwork manner, precisely when and how I expected them to. No surprises. None.

There's really not much more to say.

Zombie Queen of Newbury High Amanda Ashby Books Reviews

This novel is fast-paced and funny, but the word that kept coming to my mind was "clever." The premise is stand-alone, the story takes usual turns, and the author's careful choices of character traits and situations makes every page fresh and interesting. I recommend you read this book!
this book was for my daughter. I read it when she was finished. We both love anything, zombie, vampire etc. Call us crazy..
donation.
I enjoyed this book, it was a very fantasized themed book, and was very funny. I didn't like that it spent all that time in the beginning talking about random things, but otherwise it was good. I suggest that if it hasn't already, that they turn it into a movie, it would be really good. That's why I gave it only four stars.
I can honestly say I've never read a zombie book before this one and I was pleasantly surprised. I love how Amanda Ashby wove the zombie story into an everyday high school environment. Mia is afraid the hot football player who asked her to prom (to everyone's surprise)is going to ditch her for a more popular girl, so she decides to perform a love spell. Only the spell is actually one that gives their entire senior class and some teachers the dreaded zombie virus. It's a unique idea and a fun plot and I had many laugh-out-loud moments while reading it. As a plus, the cover is really cool.
I found this to be a cute entertaining read. Being a nerdy girl in school myself I could identify with Mia. I got why she wanted to date Rob, even if he wasn't a great match. I liked the chemistry between Mia and Chase and how they gradually drifted together.
This aspect left me wondering if Mia would wake up and realize that Chase liked her was part of the reason I kept reading. I did like the different take on zombies in this book how they went through 3 staged and how they hated water. I felt this was a nice change of pace from zombies eat everyone or eat everyone's brains. Over all it was a fun quick read.
Mia Everett is content to spend her time watching her Buffy DVDs, hanging out with her best friend Candice, and waiting to go to college, which is when the real fun will start. When senior class hottie Rob Ziggerman asks her to prom, however, she thinks that maybe she can have the high school dream after all. Things start to go wrong for Mia when cheerleader Samantha Griffin sets her sights on Rob as a potential prom date, and a panicked Mia agrees to use a love spell to keep Rob interested in her. When the love spell turns out to actually be a zombie curse, only Mia and the "new guy", Chase Miller are unaffected. Can Mia and Chase stop the curse before and save the senior class in time for prom? If they can't, then Mia will be the first victim.

Zombie Queen of Newbury High is a fun, light, and quick read. Mia is a typical teen thrown into an incredible situation, and she handles it as most teens would. Chase is a zombie hunter, but the book doesn't get weighed down in mythology; the explanation is handled quickly and concisely. There's no great evil to fight here, just a selfish prom queen wanna-be and a troublesome curse. This book is perfect for teens who want paranormal without the weight and darkness that is in a lot of current titles, and the book is clean enough to make parents and teachers comfortable. I look forward to more YA titles from Amanda Ashby.
